In this op-ed, feminist author Urvashi Butalia challenges the shrill cries for awarding the death penalty for rapists that followed immediately after the 'Nirbhaya' incident. She argues that the phenomenon is reflective of the continuing and embedded violence in society that targets women on a daily basis. She says that death of the perpetrator of the crime cannot be an effective deterrent since most rapes are committed by persons known to the victim. This piece emphasises the need to change mindsets and the culture of male privilege in order to tackle the occurrence of rape.
